Welcome to our website! We hope you'll take a few minutes to learn about us, our Akitas and our philosophy.
We are Nick and Trudy Fotiades. We have had Akitas in our home as companions since 1988 and have been showing them in the conformation ring since 1996. We are located in Loveland, Colorado, in a quiet little valley nestled up against the foothills of the Rockies. Our home site is about three acres, plenty of room for our Akitas (and one Cairn Terrier). We breed occasional litters that are planned with the goal of producing Akitas of outstanding type, with sound, healthy bodies and stable temperaments.
We are members in good standing of the Akita Club of America, the Rocky Mountain Akita Club, the Buckhorn Valley Kennel Club, and are associate members of the Squaw Peak Akita Club of Arizona. We only breed when we intend to keep something and are hoping to improve on what we have. We feel strongly that we have been blessed by having such wonderful companions, and we owe it to them to do everything we can to preserve their good health. We believe that a breeder's role is one of stewardship, requiring devotion to the preservation of true breed type, stable temperaments and sound and healthy bodies. We also firmly believe that all breeding stock should be health-certified to safeguard against heritable disease and defects. For this reason we do OFA hips and elbows certifications, eye and thyroid testing on all our breeding stock, and also require certifications and testing on bitches that are accepted for breeding to our males.
We occasionally have puppies and/or adult dogs available for placement into companion homes, and we selectively screen potential buyers to assure they believe as we do, that "a dog is a lifetime commitment." Unfortunately, too many dogs (of all breeds) do not find "forever" homes. Dogs have become a disposable commodity in our busy world. This has resulted in overwhelming numbers of rescue dogs, overcrowded humane societies and the euthanasia of thousands of dogs who deserved better. It has also resulted in animal rights organizations pushing for restrictive breeding laws that don't address the core problem with animal overpopulation, which is owner commitment and RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP.
If you think that a rescue Akita might be successfully re-homed into your family, there are several Akita Rescue organizations around the country. You can find them on the Rescue Page of the Akita Club of America website.
Below is a head portrait of one of our dogs who we feel illustrates magnificent Akita head type. Please browse our site, see and read about our beautiful dogs. And since our site is always being updated, please check back frequently to see what we'll be adding in the future. And thanks for visiting!!
